なぜ、１９５８年が日本人の「生きる意欲」がもっとも低くなったのか、私には説明に窮するのである。というのは、１９５８年というのは、個人的記憶をたどる限り（その年私は８歳だった）、「戦後日本の黄金時代」だったからである。戦争の破壊のあとは癒され、経済はめざましく復興し、庶民の生活は年ごとに豊かになり、映画も文学も音楽も活況を呈していた。にもかかわらず、その年に日本人は史上最高の自殺率を示した
